I hope each of you was able to spend some quality time with your family and love ones.
October is a busy month: we've got the pumpkin fundraiser order money and order forms due this Friday, October 18th (pumpkins available for pickup on the 24th) and our Diwali Dance fundraiser next Thursday, October 24th during school, for which we need a couple parent volunteers to help sell snacks and food at the nest!
For our Grade 7/8 Band trip to Victoria, we have room for only 20 more students, so if you haven't gotten your deposit in yet, please do so as soon as possible. The deadline on school cash online is October 30th. If you are not sure if you can afford the trip, we have bursary forms available in the band room.
Can your band student play a song for you?
If not, please make sure they are taking their instrument home to practice over the weekends. This time is very important as it is easy to fall behind if students are not taking the time to become familiar with how to create sound on their instruments. Playing assignments are posted on google classroom with accompanying video tutorials.
For students who are still finding it difficult to play their instruments, I've also started an extra class this year for students who would like a little extra support learning to play their instruments. The class is held on Wednesdays during October and November from 2:30-3:30pm (this week is early dismissal and will be from 1:30-2:30pm.)
For our students, this week is our first playing test! Students will be asked to play the song Major Duple for me and will be assessed on the following:
Posture - sitting straight on edge of chair, holding instrument in a position to be able to create the best sound.
Notes - all notes accurate, does it sound like the song?
Rhythm - Is the speed steady?
Tone - is there enough breath support to create each note? is the student using tonguing to interrupt the air stream to play multiple notes with only one breath?
Keep an eye our for a band interim report card going out with an update on your student's progress.
